A Myrtle-Approved Letter

Our assignment this week is to create a letter in response to a fictional letter to Unity which Myrtle would read and give her stamp of approval to.  Following is my Myrtle-Approved Letter:

Dear Mrs. Kendrick,

How wonderful that you have found a connection with Unity! I trust that you will study and continue to work with the Truth’s as taught in Unity and come into a greater understanding of all which we have come to know. Through practice of the Truth, you will know for yourself what is false and what is true. You will increase in your ability to discriminate between what is helpful and what is harmful. Ideas from the Mind of God are always good, pointing His children to lives filled with peace. In the light of understanding, we behold God’s presence everywhere. We see all people as His children and see all as one. We behold His kingdom everywhere and everything in right relation to all.

I, too, believe that all are blessed by the love of God, regardless of religious upbringing or practice of religion. We are all God’s children and all loved and enfolded in God’s care and keeping.  The same Christ Spirit that was and is in Jesus is also implanted in all children of God. The world may lack spiritual understanding and we are each growing in our own understanding. Those who speak of the teachings of Jesus Christ may not fully understand those teachings. Do not worry about others, their actions, or their beliefs. We are to see the perfect image and likeness of God in all people. We are not to seek to condemn others, but to raise our own consciousness and deepen our own awareness of the Truth, as we understand it.

Regarding your shortness of breath ~ Your body is like a small child. Just as a child needs to be taught, it also needs praise and appreciation. Your body needs your attention, your love and your training. Give your body your positive thoughts and your affection. Look at your wonderful, precious body as your temple. Begin to see your body as your personal instrument of the soul. You need your body to carry out God’s plans here on earth.

I would not give much concern or attention to the thought of aging. Your body is not wearing out, for the Creator is still very much on the job. The Creator is constantly repairing and rebuilding our bodies in the pattern of perfection in which they were designed. Do not let belief in age or time enter in to the expression of or restriction of health. That is the product of error thought.  So, just make up your mind that you are not going to worry about “the onslaught of old age.” You are just going to let the life and strength of God flow naturally and easily through you. Do not let the opinion of any doctor cause you to waiver in the least. God is the perfect health of HIs people and He is your perfect health. “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Study the Truths known to Unity to renew your subconsciousness. Wherever a race belief has gotten hold, or an error concept has cemented itself in your thoughts, go to work with the Truth. When you change your mental understanding, every part of your life will begin to change also. The power that created you as perfect and whole is always working to restore you to wholeness.

A new and different viewpoint is required to allow healing within your body to occur. Lift your vision beyond the appearances of poor health or difficult breathing. Lift your vision to behold God. Know that God is always providing you with light, strength, love, substance, and life. Pray for your understanding and innate and unlimited faith in God to be quickened and stirred into positive action.

Thank you for your kind gift to the work of Unity. I trust that you will continue to be blessed by the teachings and practice of the Truth in your life.

  1. Daybree,

I enjoyed your letter. In the section "aging" I very much liked how you used "Be still and know that I am God."

There was one difference in your draft that I do not detect in Myrtle Fillmore's letters. Your draft very much pushed the "house wine" as it were. OK, since this a letter to at WCTUer maybe I should say, "house brand."

I detect in Myrtle's letters a real concern for an individuals spiritual progress-- regardless of if it is with Unity or on some other mighty raft down the river of Spirit. I do not see here make several Unity plugs in one letter.

This is something that has always attracted me to Unity. At our best, we are more interested in a person's spiritual growth than if they become card-carrying Unity members, or give to the building fund-- or buy our books. We do not claim a monopoly on truth.

When I was in 8th grade I was a real "bomb the Commies back into the stone age" kind of guy. I was slated to represent our school at an American Friends Service Committee convention. The AFSC were very much for peace. Well, the conference did not come off, and the AFSC wrote me a letter telling me that they were sorry they would not get this chance to meet me (i.e., I would have been the teenage war-monger at this conference:)))

What made a lasting impression on me was that the AFSC did not try to push their "house brand" on me. Instead they told me why they did not agree with my point of view. But then they said that if I still felt the same way there were a number of groups (like the Young American for Freedom, etc) that believed as I did.

The very "soft sell" and not pushing the "house brand" always is a clear indication that the person-- be it the AFSC or Myrtle Fillmore-- represents a very good and strong product.

    Best,

    Rick

  2. Rick - You hit the nail right on the head! I had not realized the pushing of the "house brand", but you are absolutely right on with that observation. I did not pick that up as I was creating or editing the letter, I guess, because I was the one doing it. Yet, I have those same antennae's and am usually also sensitive to the aspect of "selling'".

I remember years ago the TV advertisement for Charter Hospital addiction treatment centers. At the end it said, "If you don't get help here - get help somewhere." That company gained a lot of points with folks, especially those of who us worked in addiction treatment centers (like I did) as it was an approach that was (and is) so very uncommon.

Thank you for your keen eye. I do not believe Myrtle would have applied pressure of any kind and would have just been happy for the individual's spiritual growth.

    Thanks again!

  3. Hi Daybree. Loved your letter. One of the things I liked was when you said, "Give your body your positive thoughts and your affection." As I see it, positive thought equals prayer; affection equals physical-world attention such as eating correctly and so forth. And, equating the body to a child was great! Also, this: "...the Creator is still very much on the job," implying that age needn't have anything to do with her health issues. For me personally, I don't sign on to the Fillmore's ideas about rejuvenation. I do believe, however, that my body will function exactly as its supposed to as long as it's part of the world due to exactly what you said. -Doug

    1. I understand, Doug. I, too, never intended nor believed my hair would start turning grey when I was in my 30's, yet...it did. The human body, in my opinion, is not free from the affects of aging. Our parts only last so long. Butterflies only live a few days, some (but not all) trees live quite long. It seems to me we were all created with an expiration date of some sort.

With that said, I also whole-heartedly believe we have a significant influence on the quality of the life we live and the health of our human bodies. I think we're saying the same thing.

  4. Daybree. Like your response to Mrs. Kendrick regarding her health. You remind her that the "Creator is very much on the job repairing and rebuilding our bodies in the pattern of perfection." Perfection for which it was designed, Your advise to change her point of view in order to change her health is certainly in keeping with Mrs. Fillmore's beliefs.

  5. Daybree,
You are just as loving in your drafted letter of Myrtle as she herself was. It is though we are hearing Myrtle's words directly through you. I really enjoyed how throughout the letter you are lovingly assuring her of Truth. The ending was quite lovely... You told Mrs. Kendrick how to do it... Such a teacher... "Lift your vision to behold God. Know that God is always providing you with light, strength, love, substance, and life. Pray for your understanding and innate and unlimited faith in God to be quickened and stirred into positive action."
